Our tenants are extremely important to the entire California Leasing team, and in a recent brainstorming session, we came up with our Top 5 Moving Tips to Keep You Sane!
1. First and foremost, create a strategy for your move and stick to it!
- What is my official move out date?
- What items can I purge before the move?
- Make a list with dates of important tasks that need to be handled.. getting boxes, canceling utilities, setting new utilities in the new house, renting a storage unit, reserving a moving truck or hiring movers
- Which repairs need to be made or cleaning scheduled, before turning over possession?
- Create a room-by-room list of things that need to be packed that you can live without until the move
The master plan is truly the most important part of planning your move. When you’ve got quiet time, sit down and review your strategy and make sure that it all makes sense. Put dates on a calendar and ensure you stick to it.
2. Purge your Stuff!
Visit every room in your house and make a list of the things you don’t need anymore. Performing an inventory of your valuables will expedite the process and help with knowing what things stay and what things go. Take the time to donate clothes, toys and household items that are just taking up space – this is not only easy and quick, but tax deductible and gives back to the community. Think about holding a garage sale to get rid of larger items, list items for sale on place like Craigslist and Facebook to help with that moving budget!
3. Decide Where Everything Will Go
When packing up your boxes and boxes of your belongings, it’s important to not only label those boxes accordingly, but also create a map of where things will go. Make sure you’ve measured your new space and figure out where large items like sofas, beds and bookshelves will go. If you’ve got a layout of the home or can create one, sit down and take a moment to go over where items will be fit or maximize your space. Often times we are tempted to rush through the packing process and that can sometimes lead to more stress and potential loss of valuable items. But one of the best moving tips, we can offer is to do your research! Thankfully, there are tons of great options for packing up belongs and even some that are extremely cost effective. Renting plastic crates or purchasing sturdy boxes that can be reused multiple times is a great way to ensure that your valuable items are secure and will make it their next location.
5. Maintain a Spot in Your Current Home and Stick to Routines
Who are we kidding, moving is hectic and stressful. But, if you maintain a spot in your current home for downtime, meals and decompressing at the end of the day with family and friends, then you’re less likely to keep to your plans and not allow stress to overwhelm. Many of the experts suggest a family room, dining room or loft area with a few simple items for comfortable sitting and gathering.
